Question: I'm 35 years old, I was laying in bed watching tv and felt my chest tighten for air. I didn't think anything of it. I took my pulse just to do something and my pulse is beating at 124 per minute. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Not to worry but better you investigate further.

Detailed Answer:
Hello welcome to HCM.
I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Increase heart rates are called Tachycardia. Usually patients feel them as palpitations.
Palpitations are mostly due to stress or anxiety, exercise, excitement or even in very thin individuals. But it can be due to heart disease also. So, evaluation of palpitations and Tachycardia is necessary.

My advice to you is -

1. Ask your doctor to do your holter monitoring. It is a 24 hrs ecg monitoring small machine which you can take at home. It is a confirmatory investigation to confirm you don't have any heart rhythm abnormalities.

2. Whenever you have similar episodes just calm down, Sit down and take deep breathing. Do whatever to forget palpitations otherwise anxiety will further increase them.

Don't worry, mostly sudden increase in heart rate upto 140 is usually due to stress or excitement also. But as an aware person we should go for holter monitoring.
Thank you..
I hope I have given you satisfactory answer. If you have any questions you are always welcome.
Have a nice day.
