What Causes Sudden Hematoma Formation On Leg?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Oct 2014
Question: Is it likely to get 2 hematomas on the same leg without any physical injury or trauma? I noticed two lumps in the same leg a few weeks ago, one a week before the other..both with a bruise. Bruises are almost gone, lumps are not. A couple weeks prior I had what felt like nerve pain throughout my legs. could these lumps be something serious.? Can they be related to the prior pain? Do I need to be seen and if so how soon?

Additional info: marble size lumps present over 3 weeks, one on my outter upper thigh, the other on the outter side of my calf. Same leg. noticed both with bruising, bruising has lessened, lumps have not. The lump on the thigh is now becoming very tender and the surrounding thigh is sore too, hurts to sit. No swelling noticed. The prior nerve pain came suddenly and was dismissed by a doctor as a symptom of anxiety, since the pain was in both legs. Prior pain went away after a few weeks, lumps showed up a couple weeks after pain subsided. Not sure if the two are related.

Brief Answer:
Can be a bleeding disorder.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting your query.

The lumps that you have noticed are not likely to be related to the nerve pain. The lump and bruise is suggestive of spontaneous hematomas.

This can be for many causes such as
- Platelet disorders of counts like thrombocytopenia,
- Disorders of function like Glanzman syndrome where platelets are lazy i.e. normal in number but slow to clumping and degranulation.
- Deranged Prothrombin time (PT) /activated Partial Thromboplastin time (aPTT) secondary to many causes including iatrogenic cause by taking warfarin for cardiac arrhythmias
- And lax and fragile skin secondary to senile atrophy of dermis and reduced connective tissue supportive parenchyma and as a result of treatment with steroids.

These are not to be ignored and you need to be seen as soon as possible. You need to consult a physician and get a blood count along with Capillary fragility test done to detect bleeding tendency.

In the absence of other clinical symptoms leukemia is a rare possibility and complete blood counts can rule out leukemia.

Discuss about these possibilities with your physician and he/she can stream line these test for you. You also may be put on Vitamin C and Vitamin A supplements to improve skin texture and reduce easy bruising.

I hope this answers your query.
