Posted on Mon, 30 May 2016
Question: i just came from a care spot at 530 today my ear suddenly started bleeding at work. i am 50 and a woman. the doctor at the care place said he could not see where the blood was coming from but it was not my ear drum. it is now ten oclock and my ear is still bleeding. no pain doctor just pretty much charged me for a cotton swab. said if still bleeding tomorrow to go see a ear, nose and throat guy. i am also having thyroid problems with one nodule making my thyroid swell but haven't gotten in to see the thyroid doctor yet to find if its cancer. i also have hypertension and am taking bp meds.

Brief Answer:
Bleeding from the ear

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

If you are actively bleeding from the ear then tranexamic acid injection should preferably be given in an ER if the blood is proven to be clinically not full of pus and discharge. If no infective cause such as acute suppurative otitis media (ASOM) is identified then bleeding disorder should be looked for. Investigations should include complete blood counts, Coagulation profile / PT, APTT, INR. These should be done after careful local examination, preferably carried out by an ENT specialist.

BP should also be checked and optimized slowly if on the higher side.
For the thyroid nodule, ultrasound, TFTs and biopsy can be planned accordingly in consultation with your doctor. The thyroid is unlikely to be related to the current presenting issue of bleeding from the ear.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
