What Causes Stomach Gas And Bloating While Skipping A Dosage Of Lasix?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: I have cardiomyopathy, CHF, and copd,
currently Im taking lasix 40mg, lisinopril 5mg, and carvedilol 3mg,
if I missed lasix for a day or two I would develop stomach gas and bloating and felt like an ulcer.
back on lasix it would go away, till recently, a constant stomach ache , Im eliminating all but lasix to see if it helps, also after internet research Im starting a potent live (refrigerated) pro-biotic, My daughter an RN says many similars end up on lasix 40mg twice a day. but I say where will I go after that fails and what size affect will there be? I also have a hard time sleeping laying down and thought of using oxygen when this happens? Not having any insurance currently I can only check into emergency room, which I will do when time. Currently working construction type I find I just have to stop and catch my breath every set of steps , hill or carry. I realize this is to be expected and will be retiring as soon as I can , now 59 yrs old. Im ok for 4-6 hour of work and will search for office type job soon.
Your advise is welcome.

Brief Answer:
Please, you need lasix. We give as much as needed and has no resistance!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about your symptoms. I have reviewed the information fully and it is classical of heart failure. Difficulties walking, working, carrying and lying flat are very typical. Skipping Lasix would not help because the heart is unable to push around the body all the fluid and thus lasix is very important to make sure that much fluid is eliminated and makes the heart not to handle more than it can. Please, stick to your drugs and have no fears as there is no too much dose of lasix. We often administer as much as required and 40mg is not the maximum. However, most patients would be fine with 40mg and do not require higher doses.

For your disease condition, construction work is really not the best at this time. As soon as possible, please switch to a less physically demanding job. I will recommend you take the lasix as prescribed and do not be afraid of having no further options when you reach 40mg twice daily.

I hope you find this information helpful. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Hello,
thank you for the reply, however I did not ever state that I would quit lasix , just the other two drugs , Im glad to hear you say that double dose is ok, Im trying to deal with a stomach , gi , problem right now , and if this is a separate issue or what is causing it, Im stopping the other two drugs to see if this helps first and the probiotics and your option? I have serious loss of apatite , belching , indigestion, and pasty taste with certain foods like any dairy (no big loss) I stay away from any foods with vitimin K, for it thickens the blood, my colestrial pasted test. any suggestions. Brief Answer:
Please, don’t stop lisinopril and carvedilol !

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this follow up.

From all the information you provided, stopping lisinopril and carvedilol will be a bad decision at this time. Please, refrain from doing so.

I have no issues with probiotics. Though I don’t always prescribe them, most of my patients seen to report improvement when they try them. Besides, they have no major side effects to be afraid of.

When was the last time you checked your blood potassium levels? Daily lasix may cause low levels that can explain general body malaise and weakness. For how long have you been feeling this way?

I wish you well.

Hello Doc,
I havent had potassium blood level test done yet.
I have been taking a potassium pill supplement, and try to eat potassium rich foods,
I once ran out of lasix and borrowed some from family, but later to find out that the dose was only 5mgs, at that point (two weeks) I was feeling very sick, and went to a clinic which I got my prescriptions refilled, although I know the lasix is working , my stomach issues continued on the same (now about 6 months) mostly in the morning, and causing me not to eat all day. or just some fruit.

Brief Answer:
I will recommend you try omeprazole at this time!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have reviewed this information fully and at this time you stomach problem could be related to gastritis. I will suggest that you use omeprazole 20mg tablets for a few days. We would be able to tell if this is helping or not and will help shape our approach to resolving this problem.

Let me know if you would be doing this and how you feel after doing so.
