What Causes Splotchy Rash On Thigh Spreading To Other Thigh?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: I woke up this afternoon with a splotchy rash on the front of my thigh & later it spread to my other thigh. Before the rash I became unusually tired/exhausted and developed a mild sore throat both of which have gotten worse. The only thing that changed in my environment is that I was given a 5 week old puppy.

Brief Answer:
Appears to be allergic reaction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. It appears to be secondary to allergy, possibly due to new puppy.
2. Secondary to dehydration due to allergy, you seem to have the symptoms of tiredness. For sore throat, do salt water gargling.
3. You might need to stay away from the puppy and all items, puppy came in contact with for sometime, till symptoms subside.
4. Take antihistamine like cetrizine. Local at rash site, apply calamine lotion. Hope there is no bleeding anywhere or blood in urine.
5. If symptoms increase, you will require steroid injections and you might have breathing difficulties and you would need to go to ER.

At present, take plenty of fluids, avoid puppy, take antihistamine and apply calamine lotion.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.

I forgot to tell you that I take an antihistamine daily & I also have a Rx for allergy nasal spray that I use daily. Also, earlier last year I lost a dog & then last summer I lost another dog. That is why I received the puppy gift. I did not get the puppy until I was already sick w/the slight fever, sore throat, and extreme fatigue so I knew I was coming down w/something before I every saw or knew about the puppy. Could this change your advice?

Brief Answer:
Might need additional antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

It seems you have already a viral fever, which has presented with features of upper respiratory tract infection.
As you are already on antihistamine, nasal secretions and sore throat are less.
Continue paracetamol along with salt water gargling. Additionally steam inhalation and lozenges will help. Do all twice a day.
If fever and sore throat, has not reduced since a week, amoxycillin and clavulonic acid antibiotic need to be started.
Continue with good hydration and nutrition.
For rashes, its not related to respiratory allergy. Other cause needs to be identified and application of calamine lotion can be done in mean time.
For medication, you will require prescription from your doctor.
Get a complete hemogram once to check for anemia and evaluation of viral or allergic evaluation.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
