What Causes Spitting Up Of Blood And Congestion In Chest?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 May 2015
Question: This morning I spit out blood in my phlegm. This has happened before maybe one and a half months ago. I went to a clinic and got an X-ray but the doctor said she saw no signs of infection by the center of my chest sounded a little congested and gave me some antibiotics. Back then I smoked a lot of cigarettes and had a persistent cough. Since then I have significantly cut down on cigarettes (only 4 a week) and the cough has mostly gone away. However I feel like sometimes I have to think to breathe (I don't know if that is anxiety or something). Now this morning I also split out phlegm. I have severe allergies and I am beginning to feel itchy eyes and congestion. I coughed a lot this morning but my lungs feel a bit itchy and my throat a little itchy too. Could this be the cause of bloody phlegm?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of bronchitis is more in your case.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
In my opinion you are mostly having bronchitis.
It is common in smokers.
Chest x ray is normal in bronchitis.
And your symptoms like cough, hemoptysis (blood in phlegm) etc are seen in bronchitis.
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
PFT is needed for the diagnosis of bronchitis.
It will also tell you about severity of the disease.
And treatment of bronchitis is based on severity only.
You may need inhaled bronchodilators and antihistamines drugs.
But the first thing you should do is to quit smoking completely, as soon as possible.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Thanks! So i went to a doctor and he said my lings sound fine and no signs of infection. Is it possible that i clear my throat and hawk loogies too much and that is what is causing my bleeding? It feels like i have a lot of phlegm in my theoat so i try and get it out. Should i just leave it be?

Brief Answer:
Yes, you can quit smoking and leave this thing.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
Yes, difficulty in coughing out sputum can lead to hemoptysis due to friction bleeding.
So if you are quitting smoking immediately, your excess sputum production and hemoptysis can be reverted back to normal.
But after quitting smoking if you still have symptoms like hemoptysis or excess mucus then consult pulmonologist and get done PFT to rule out bronchitis.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

I still spit out a tiny tinge of blood in mucus when i cleared my throat this morning. If it is an injury in my throat where my mucus is made how long can i ezpect until it is fully healed? My doctor also have me prednisone and singulair to tkae for medication. What do these do and will they help the blood go away?

Brief Answer:
Do you have fever?

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
I can understand your situation.
I want to know few more things.
1. Are you still smoking?
2. Do you have fever?
3. What is the color of your phlegm? Is it white or yellow?
And you might be having inflammation in the airway due to cigarette smoke.
And this inflammation can cause mucus production.
This is the reason for mucus production.
And prednisone is steroid and it is having anti inflammatory action. So prednisone is given.
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
