What Causes Sores On The Tongue In Infants?

default
Posted on Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Question: Hi good evening. My baby girl is 2 months old.

Currently she is accepting only right side of her mothers breast and she is totally refusing to take the milk from the left breast. She is crying profusely while we are trying to make her drink from left breast.

Secondly she is not accepting bottled milk even if the milk is pumped from the left breast. She is biting the bottle nipple very hard and not taking in any milk.

Recently she had some sores on her tongue and she refused to take the milk from one side; then and the doctor has advised these meds. She was ok after we used the meds but from today we are facing the issue of refusing the milk has started again. A snaphot of the prescription is also enclosed for your perusal. A pic of baby's sores is also enclosed.

Finally can you please suggest us what are those medicines in the prescription for and is it safe.

Kindly advise what should be done.

Thank you,

XXXX

Brief Answer:
She is suffering from oral thrush

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

I have gone through the detailed history, image and prescription.
First I would like to elaborate the medications in prescription-
1)Azithral- An antibiotic
2)Ventolin- Salbutamol, helps in cough and spasm of airway
3)Omnacortil- A steroid prednisolone
I want to know if she is suffering from cough/cold;as all the above mentioned medications are given for that. Omnacortil(steroid)is frequently prescribed by practitioner, although not recommended because of its side effects.

4)Nuforce- contains fluconazole an antifungal can be given for oral thrush.
5)Anaforton- contains paracetamol and camylofin(an antispasmodic) used in colic.

After going through the history and image it appears that she has problem in breast feed due to the oral thrush.
I would like to apply clotrimazole(antifungal) mouth pain both to the tongue of the baby and mother's nipple.Clean your hand properly before applying the lotion.I won't suggest you to use bottle for feed as this causes nipple confusion(confusion between the bottle nipple and mother's nipple and can cause injury to mother's nipple). If you want to give expressed breast milk better use katori-spoon.

Please clarify my doubts so that I better able to help you out.

Regards

Dear Sir,

Thank you for the response.

She suffered from cold and those oral thrushes for which we have taken her to a pediatric for which he has prescribed those meds.

Currently she is crying while farting. We dont know whether she is crying due to farting or any other reason behind her cries.

We can feel by seeing thebaby that she is feeling a bit uncomfortable due to which she is not able to be comfortable with herself.

Sir, i would like to know why she is taking only milk from one side and not from other side and after administering those two meds in the photograph, baby slept. Is that meds in the photograph safe. Are they sedatives.

I would also like to know what are the foods that my wife should take and what to avoid for more secretion of milk.

Brief Answer:
I won't recommend steroid

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back

I can understand your concern. The most likely cause of not feeding from left side of breast is oral thrush causing her pain in a particular posture.
I won't get worried if she is active, there is no restriction of neck movement and accepting from other side of breast well.
The prescribed medication contains omnacortil a steroid.I won't suggest the use of omnacortil as it is not recommended for cold/cough due to its side effects.
There are no sedatives in the prescription.
Encourage the mother to take plenty of fluids, milk, dal and to avoid oily, spicy foods.
A lactating mother should receive extra 500 kcal and extra protein for better lactation.
You can also give her dry fruits and egg, paneer or soya bean for providing extra calorie and protein.

I hope this helps.
I shall be glad to answer if you have any further query.
Regards
