Posted on Fri, 27 Mar 2015
Question: I bumped the calf of my right leg against a step yesterday It felt sore right away and it is still tender to the touch today. Also feels slighlty inflamed.
No redbess however. No brusing either. Can a a minor hit fo leg cause a depoe vein blood clot? I went to see doctor and she said it looks like trauma to soft tissue. I am little concerned becaue it it feels slightlyswollen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have read your query.
yes small trauma to calf can result in soft tissue injury and leading to deep venous blood clot.
I will advise you ice fomentation and compression with crepe bandage.
If no relief then investigation like CBC ,colour doppler and x ray may be required.
Physiotherapy like ultrasound and Tens will help you.
Also do knee and ankle exercises to avoid further clot.
Till time take medicine given by your doctor.
I hope I have answered your questions. If you have further questions please feel free to contact us. I will be happy to answer. Take care.

How LIKELY is blood clot from minor trauma, even if possible in theory? Does the fact it feels swollen is an abnormal finding, or could it just be ligaments? Doctor I visited said there would be reason for concern if I had told her the tenderness and swelling developed on its own. But since it followed hit, should not be major worry just keep eye on it. Aren't there more troubling symptoms to look for such as redness, warmth to to touch, and swollen feet? Also, I felt the tenderness right away after hit - can blot clots develop immediately from minor trauma?
Is soft tissue injury to calf same thing as DVT, or Is Soft tissue injury a separate issue and a minor condition in and of itself? Would soft tissue injury present as tenderness and minor swelling?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of DVT from minor trauma is very less.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Possibility of DVT from minor trauma is very less.

Minor injury can lead to swelling, which may gradually subside.

Clot may not develop immediately after minor trauma.

Soft tissue injury and DVT are different issue.

Yes soft tissue injury can present as tender and minor swelling.
DVT swelling is hard, persistent and painful on compression.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care.

Hello again. I have trouble understanding the difference between dvt being painful on "compression" versus soft tissue injury presenting as tenderness. If I press on the area where I banged my calf, it hurt. Isn't that just normal tenderness?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

yes, local tenderness can be due to injury.

Clinical examination and further investigation will confirm diagnosis of dvt.
