What Causes Sore Throat After An Upper Endoscopy?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Dec 2016
Question: I had an upper endoscopy on Tuesday. I have Barretts so I have had this procedure many times. I had more post-op pain than normal. It really hurt to swallow even water. Food was really uncomfortable. I thought it would pass. The Dr said not to worry it will pass. Today, 4 days later, I can't burp, it hurts to just drink water. It is tender to the touch from the outside. I have never had any pain after the first day. Should I be concerned that 4 days later I am having problems. The Dr gave me a Rx of "Magic Mouthwash". No idea what it is even.

Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
To recapitulate: Female/65 - Noted the history related to repeated upper GI for Barrette's -latest on Tue - more pain than normal - hurts to swallow even water - even after 4 days it hurts just to drink water - can not burp - tender to touch from outside - wants to know whether to worry about - Doctor said not to worry and asked for Magic Mouthwash - no idea what it is - noted the history related to medical problems, medications and allergy...

Yes, it is worrisome to have continued pains even after 4 days.
The most probable cause can be :
Severe esophagitis may be secondary to dilatation effect of upper GI Endoscopy or biopsies, you already have Barrette's accentuating pain.

I would advise you the following in such a situation.
PPI like Omeprazole or as advised.
Antacid / Magic Mouthwash as advised - it is combination of many medicines - please inquire in your Pharmacy.
Motility regulator like Domperidone - all under supervision of your treating Doctor.
Get back to the Endoscopist to discuss further and may be to get needed second look endoscopy to know what exact problem is.
