Brief Answer:
May be muscular

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Female/66 - sore spot - outside of neck on right - can not feel anything - just soreness - no difference or swelling when seen in mirror - started on Friday, 13 May ....

If nothing is palpable or can be seen, no lump, no redness or so then the most probable reason can be myalgia/muscular. Since the neck is always in movement when awake the strained muscles do not heal early.

Are the movements of the neck painful?
Does the pain increase on making the muscles on tight?
Is the skin above normal?

Please give feedback and ask for further relevant queries.

Movement doesn't not seem painful. However I noticed last night, since I ususally sleep on the right side, when if I laid right on it - it was painful.
I'm not quite sure how to make the muscles tight, but clenching jaw, stretching chin up and tight are not painful.
Skin is totally normal.

Ultrasound

Thanks for your feedback.
In such a situation I would then advise you the following:
High resolution ultrasonography of the area.
Clinical evaluation and further tests and treatment as per the diagnosis.
