What Causes Small Bowel Obstruction?

Posted on Wed, 24 Dec 2014
Question: Hello. I am a 46 year old male with history of GERD, Nissan Fundlicipation and SBO surgery. I had a SBO back in January of this year with LOA. and since August of this year, I have had very similiar symptoms. Every time I eat I get severely distended and begin to regurgiate some food and fluid. The CT scans all show non SBO during the times. However, my blood work shows almost the same levels out of range. For example, total protein low, Hemoglobin, Hemocrait and red blood count all below range without explaination. A recent xray suddenly shows multiple phleboliths seen in the pelvis. Can this possibly be related in some way?

Brief Answer:
SBO requires revision surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir.

I understand your query and concern.

As per your current clinical status you seem to have residual small bowel obstruction that is causing you these symptoms.

I strongly recommend you to visit your surgeon again to for complete and through laparoscopic visualisation of the small bowel adhesions and repeat adhesiolysis.

Once all the adhesions are removed, only then you can be free of symptoms.

Regarding the blood picture results you mentioned, the low range values are due to chronic iron deficiency anemia secondary to impaired iron absorption due to bowel surgeries.

These can be corrected with parenteral iron supplementation.

Regarding phleboliths, they are quite related to the SBO.
These phleboliths are due to impaired calcium absorption secondary to LOA.

These phleboliths can be eliminated after revision surgery for SBO.

Thank you.
