What Causes Skipped Heart Beat?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Nov 2014
Question: Dear dr,

I had 2 holter done in the past 15 months. Holter picked up skipped beats of 385. Echo showed MVP mild regurgitation. Dr isn't quite concern and recommended rest and light exercise. I went to the doctor because I can feel the the skipped feelings and is annoying.

As time passes the skipped beats were less and less felt. There were some days that there wasn't a single felt at all. I felt good and happy the lesser they were. Recently I felt kinda moody and depressed. I was shopping for fruits when I felt a one second squeezed in my heart and my breath stop for a second. I immediately felt my pulse but all was well. After that I began to feel those skipped beats again. And I'm very afraid they will increase and disrupt my life again.

What is that one second squeezed feeling? Is it harmful?

If my skipped beats are caused by MVP mild regurgitation , why are there times I don feel them at all? They simply gone for some time or once a while,

Brief Answer:
Not harmful,neither serious condition...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

1. You have been diagnosed with MVP mild regurgitation which is often associated with extra systoles (arrhythmia).

2. When you take alcohol, energetic drinks or are stressed out, these extra-systoles will become more frequent, thus, you get that "squeezed feeling".

3. It is not a harmful situation, neither serious. It is a benign condition, and is not life threatening.

4. To avoid having that feeling again (or at least, minimize the chances to get skipped heart beats), you should:
- avoid energetic drinks, illicit drugs, or drinking alcohol or smoking
- take betablockers if Holter monitoring is showing frequent extra systoles until stabilized

Hope it helped!
