Brief Answer:
Examination of the ear and nose can identify the actual cause of the noise

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

The sizzling sound, which is also termed as tinnitus could be related to various causes, which needs to be evaluated thoroughly. It is not true that all cases of tinnitus cannot be treated completely. Each case is different and depends upon the problem. If there is a simple obstruction of the Eustachian tube (the tube connecting nose and the ear), then the tinnitus can be treated with nasal decongestants. Likewise, wax in the ear can also cause tinnitus and on removal of the same, the noise can be alleviated.

The commonest causes are:
1. Wax in the ear
2. Eustachian tube dysfunction
3. Fluid in the middle ear
4. Age related nerve weakness, etc.

Hence my suggestion to you is to get your wife examined by an apt ENT specialist and she may require audiological investigations to confirm the diagnosis.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.
