Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: i have 2 times ultrasound in which my right kidney is measured 10.0*4.4 and left kidney measures 8.6*4.1.
in second utra sound the difference is also same 2.4 cm.i mean my left kidney is small in compared to my right kidney.

ultrasound reports are below

-1 - small left kidney with prominent pelvicalcyceal system.Mild fullness of left pelvicalcyceal system
2-cystitis with significant PVRU S/O chronic retention.

I am very afraid...is it some signs of kidney failure?can u please suggest what may be the cause and how can i be treated.can i be treated only with medicines by consulting normal urologist.

Brief Answer:
This is not kidney failure

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Jyothi BL and I will be answering your query.

Looking at the reports and query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Mild variation in kidney size is usual. Difference is 1.4 cm, and it could be developmental.

2. However, the mild fulness of pelvicalyceal system along with bladder infection and increased post void residual urine, suggests early disease leading on to obstructive pyelonephritis.

3. You need to get first treated for bladder infection, along with identification of cause of obstruction. Cystoscopy to identify the cause and urine culture for treatment is necessary at present.

4. These are not signs of kidney failure. These only could be possible early symptoms. Get your serum urea, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, which will be normal. If abnormal, these are signs of kidney failure.

Meet your doctor to get the tests done and based on culture and sensitivity, it can be appropriately treated. Cystoscopy findings can only guide whether a surgical or medical line of treatment is necessary.

Hope it helps.
