What Causes Shortness Of Breath?

Posted on Mon, 24 Oct 2016
Question: Are there any neurological conditions that could cause a person to take deep breaths at random?

I have been having episodes of shortness of breath. Often it is worse with activity, but other times it comes on at random. For instance I will be sitting down then all the sudden I take these deep exaggerated breaths. It is worse with standing and I usually feel better when lying flat. Usually it doesn't last long. It is not related to anxiety. I can be just relaxing and it happens. I have seen a psychiatrist and he does not believe it is psych related. I have a lot of other strange symptoms and am being evaluated by an endocrinologist and am going to have a cortisol stim test done. It has been a long battle of seeing many different specialists including cardiology and pulmonology. So now I am seeing an endocrinologist, but I am just wondering if there could be a neurological component that is causing me to take these deep breaths.

Brief Answer:
Not a neurological condition.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

I must say that it is a strange manifestation, especially considering psychological causes have been excluded. I am afraid that there is no neurological condition which could explain that either. There are neurological conditions which may manifest with shortness of breath but not in that random way you describe and not with those deep breaths but quite the other way around.
So I am sorry if I can't shed more light either, hopefully the endocrinological investigations will yield some more useful information.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
