What Causes Sharp Pain On Left Side Of Abdomen?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Feb 2015
Question: Hi, 65 - in okay health, but overweight; 5'9" and 256lbs. Ironically, went to weight watchers today. Got home today and sneezed (my fault for not cleaning filters in furnace). Immediate sharp pain in left side of abdomen about 8" below chest nipple and on side. Doesn't ache but any bending over movement or getting up produces pain. Put on an old back support truss I had - that helped. Probed with hand fingers at area where pain is - no bulging; no extreme tenderness. But I just sneezed a few minutes ago and pain was there. Can't see doc until Monday earliest -- figure it is possible a hernia but wondering what to look for Sunday as I wait. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Possibly a muscle cramp rather than hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir!

Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

I understand your concern.By your symptoms,I feel that It could possibly be a muscle cramp while doing any physical activity which might have gone unnoticed.Until and unless you feel any bulging always or during coughing or sneezing, you can probable not think of hernia now.

You can try giving hot compress on the sore area. You can try taking muscle relaxant tablets like Myospaz to get releif. You can always go for a whole abdomen ultrasonography to rule out any other pathology.

Hope this helps.Feel free to ask more.
