What Causes Sharp Pain In Ribs While Treating Restless Leg Syndrome?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Feb 2016
Question: I've had restless leg syndrome for a while now. A couple weeks ago I started on the birth control pill, Microgestin, and noticed my RLS symptoms seemed a bit more intense. One leg seems to ache a bit more at times--a very dull ache that feels better with massage/firm pressure. (Standing or sitting on it.) Normally I wouldn't give these a second thought--more annoying than painful, the ache is not new--but I'm just paranoid about blood clots, since I'm on these new meds. I don't fit any of the risk factors: I'm young, healthy weight, and don't smoke, but I'm also an obsessive-compulsive and don't need logic to worry! I would know if I had something as serious as a blood clot, right? It would be more severe than an annoying dull ache? (The other day I had a sharp pain under my rib cage, but it went away after 5 or 10 minutes & I chalked it up to anxiety.) I just want to be sure I'm not brushing off any early symptoms. Thank you!

Detailed Answer:
Hi, and thanks for your question.

You're correct in stating that birth control raises your risk of blood clots. However, the symptoms you describe are not consistent with a clot. You leg would be in more pain, it would actually get WORSE with pressure/massage, and it would be more swollen than the other leg. Don't worry! Everything is fine.
