What Causes Sharp Knee Pain?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Apr 2014
Question: I get a sharp pain at the front of my knee when I kneel or touch it. It does not bother me otherwise (ie Walking Gardening etc). There appears to be a very small swelling at the point I touch but no redness or obvious swelling. I cannot recall getting a bang or hitting it. Age 65.

Brief Answer: Due to osteoarthritis. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. There are many causes for pain in a single knee joint at this age group. Most common cause is Osteo-arthritis of knee joint. But it is advisable to rule out other causes also by taking an MRI scan of the affected knee joint. MRI will help us to find out whether your bones are normal or not. If there is no history of trauma or injury to the knee, no history of fever, no swelling in the foot, no other joints involvement then it should be mostly due to age-related wear and tear i.e. osteoarthritis. I would suggest you to get yourself clinically examined by your doctor and follow his advise. For osteoarthritis, weight reduction is the main treatment along with medicines to decrease pain like NSAID's - paracetamol, aceclofenac etc., Life style modifications like avoiding sitting cross legged, squatting will decrease the rate of progression of osteoarthritis. Exercises like quadriceps strengthening, swimming, straight leg raising will help in improving the muscle strength around the knee and will help in decreasing pain. I hope this answers your query. Thank you for your answer. Just one question - the fact that I have no pain with movement (and I do walk and garden a lot during the week) has me puzzled as I always thought osteoarthritis occurred with joint actual movement? My pain occurs is only when it it touched

Brief Answer: Osteoporosis is likely. Detailed Answer: Hello. Thanks for writing again. It is normal to have no pain while walking and pain present on touching the area. The pain is prominent while climbing stairs. The pain on touching indicates an inflammation in the area. Hope my answer is helpful. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish you good health. Regards
