What Causes Severe Tingling Sensation And Swelling In The Feet?

default
Posted on Sat, 22 Apr 2017
Question: I have had for 3 days the following: severe tingling of the feet, severe swollen feet and ankles. The swelling is very tight under my skin. The severe tingling of the feet happens in the uppermost foot, before digits, and before calf on leg. Just yesterday it was severe pain on walking as well. I had to stoop over walking. I also have a reddish hue under my shin skin. What type of doctor do you think I should see--cardiologist? I have one at St. Mary's hospital in Langhorne, PA and I have neurologist at University of Pennsylvania.

Brief Answer:
General physician will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Tingling sensations with severe swollen feet can be due to DVT nerve damage, low vitamin B 12 levels, thyroid disease or vascular deformity. You have to get a NCV( nerve conduction velocity) test done to assess the damage to the nerves. Till that time, wear flat slippers and take some vitamin B12 which is helpful in nerve injuries. If symptoms persist then you have to get your blood sugar levels also checked as it can be due to peripheral neuropathy.

In your case, I suggest you an immediate general physician consultation. You need to get blood tests, kidney function tests, electrolyte levels, ECG and stress ECHO, venous Doppler of the legs, Vitamin B 12 levels, NCV (nerve conduction velocity) and urine tests done.

I hope this answers your query.

I three DVTs and three pulmonary embolisms along with three pneumonias. Just a FYI. I will give this list to my primary so he can order the tests associated with all of the conditions.

I had to go to the emergency room Sunday night. I had not urinated for two days. I'm on a catheter and will be going to the neurologist again for a bladder test. Little do they know I'm like a camel. I used to teach and held the urine in my bladder until I got to my break time.
Since you are an orthopedic surgeon, I have another question. I had arthroscopy last July in both knees for partially torn menisci. While the doctor was in there, he noticed a small osteonecrosis. He took that out. I am still sometimes having excruciating pain in that upper shin area that reaches to the middle of my shin. He said I would be in pain the rest of my life. I will never go back to him. He took something out that I did not know about. I read that osteonecrosis that is small is only to be kept an eye on in case it gets bigger. Pain is excruciating sometimes that I gasp outloud and my husband asks what's wrong. I tell him again--my shin.

Brief Answer:
Get an MRI scan done.

Detailed Answer:
If there is a sudden sharp pain in a specific area of the shin then it can be due to tendonitis or osteonecrosis again. This needs a regular monitoring and you need to get a repeat MRI scan done to find out the cause.
Regards.
