Brief Answer:
Injury to the ligament, NSAIDS, analgesic spray

Detailed Answer:
Hi Peggy
Welcome
I have gone through your query.
I would like to know few more information like
Since when you are facing this problem?
Is there any history of knee injury?
As per your history and symptoms there can be injury to ligament.

It can be addressed by using a NSAID and some physical therapy. NSAIDS ( like Naproxen)will have antiinflammatory and analgesic property and will be helpful. You can apply analgesic gel or spray to the affected part.

Physical therapy -- Physiotherapy by USG and TENS.
Exercises for knee which will help you to strengthen knee muscles.
Lying on your tummy- flex knee alternately, make knee rotation in flexion.
Sitting on chair- extend your legs alternately [hold in extension for 15 sec.

If the symptoms persist, we have to rule out any injury minisci of the knee, so kindly see orthopaedician for examination and further help, if required MRI can be done.

Hope this helps
Take care

Thank you for your quick response. I was standing on a steep hill for about an hour a couple of days before the pain started. But there was no fall or twisting of the limb that I can recall.
I will try the excercises.
