What Causes Severe Muscle Spasms Throughout Body?

Question: I am a very healthy 63 year old male who has been fit all my life and has been exercising aggressively 4-5 days per week for the past 10 years. I have took up bike riding 5 years ago to reduce trauma from high impact exercise. I eat fairly healthy....no junk food whatsoever.
Approx 6 months ago I started experiencing muscle pain all over my body in a sort of traveling ailment from left back should to my right, lower back, to my inside hamstring, to my calves. the pain feels like someone is poking me with a sharp instrument. In addition, I am having very strong muscle spasms that are quite debilitating and can last from 10 minutes to nearly an hour. I strained my lower abdominal muscle 3 months ago and can not recover no matter how I treat or rest it. My life has been turned upside down and I can barely walk without some muscle issue popping up. I have been prescribed by my family doctor to take magnesium supplements, increase my potassium intake, increase my fluid consumption ( more than 90 ounces of water per day ), going to acupuncturist, massage, chiropractor, etc, etc........no0thing relieves my symptoms and I can not recover from any strain. Help....any ideas?

I would also like to know if there is a focused diet that may be suggested to help improve my nuero- muscular functioning?

Reduce stress. Develop a plan to avoid or limit overexertion and emotional stress. Allow yourself time each day to relax. That may mean learning how to say no without guilt. But try not to change your routine completely. People who quit work or drop all activity tend to do worse than do those who remain active. Try stress management techniques, such as deep-breathing exercises or meditation.
Get enough sleep. Because fatigue is one of the main characteristics of fibromyalgia, getting sufficient sleep is essential. In addition to allotting enough time for sleep, practice good sleep habits, such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day and limiting daytime napping.
Exercise regularly. At first, exercise may increase your pain. But doing it gradually and regularly often decreases symptoms. Appropriate exercises may include walking, swimming, biking and water aerobics. A physical therapist can help you develop a home exercise program. Stretching, good posture and relaxation exercises also are helpful.
Pace yourself. Keep your activity on an even level. If you do too much on your good days, you may have more bad days. Moderation means not overdoing it on your good days, but likewise it means not self-limiting or doing too littleon the days when symptoms flare.
Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy foods. Limit your caffeine intake. Do something that you find enjoyable and fulfilling every day.

I have a follow up appointment with my primary care doctor next week. What questions should I ask for additional testing to determine if I indeed have Fibromayalgia? Are there specific blood tests that may pinpoint the condition? If I do have Fibromyalgia, can it lead into other more serious conditions or is the condition a pain condition that has to be managed?

In the past, doctors would check 18 specific points on a person's body to see how many of them were painful when pressed firmly. Newer guidelines don't require a tender point exam. Instead, a fibromyalgia diagnosis can be made if a person has had widespread pain for more than three months — with no underlying medical condition that could cause the pain.

Blood tests

While there is no lab test to confirm a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, your doctor may want to rule out other conditions that may have similar symptoms. Blood tests may include:

Complete blood count
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
Thyroid function tests

Fibromyalgia does not usually lead to any more serious conditions.

It is a pain condition to be managed.
