What Causes Severe Muscle Leg Cramps?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 Aug 2014
Question: Hi,

I am not sure what is going on with me. End of May, I went to ER for severe muscle leg camps. Two weeks ago, I was hospitalized for vertigo. After all testing and a five day stay it was concluded that I had benign postional vertigo. This morning I woke up feeling like I had wet myself. I have had diarreah. It turned that I must have passed gas in my sleep and I along with the gas, I had released mucous. I have never done this before. I do not know if the symtoms are inter-related. I have diabetes and hypothyroidism. I already missed two weeks of work.

Brief Answer:
Might be diabetes-related

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Having severe muscle leg cramps might be related to:
- damages to the peripheral blood vessels/nerves due to diabetes
- lack of multivitamins and minerals (especially of b complex and magnesium)
- viral infection

The Benign Positional Vertigo is commonly happening among patients of your age. I advise to:
- consume a lot of water during the day (keep hydrated)
- do not stand up or move your head quickly
- do not expose your neck to cold air (especially when you sweat)

With regards to waking up feeling like you had wet yourself, there is nothing to worry if it occurs only once. However, if you keep wetting yourself unvoluntary, I advise to consult with GI specialist to measure the muscle tone of the GI tract as they might be affected by diabetes.

At the end, if you keep your diabetes under control, you might not face such problems anymore. It is very important to conduct a healthy lifestyle and diet regimen in order to keep your blood sugar levels within the normal/acceptable range.

Hope it was of help! If you have further queries, do not hesitate to contact me!

The odd thing is that my blood sugar levels are around 99 right now. The bloodwork showed my sugar levels to be well regulated. Is there something I can do or take a medicine to insure that I will not have mucousy leakage problem when I am in public? At first I thought I had passed gas in my sleep - not sure I did. I think it leaked out. I am bloated with some, stomach pain and diarreah.

Following suggestions...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

I am happy to know that your diabetes is well controlled.

Now, you are reporting to have mucus leakage only once (that morning). So, this makes me think over an acute bowel problem (e.g. due to virus).

If the involuntary bowel leakage will be repeated, then, should schedule manometry testing to evaluate the status of anal sphincter and nearby structures.

For the moment, I advise to:
- wear monthly liners when you go out in public
- try to go to toilet when you feel to pass gas
- get toilet trainings to strengthen the muscles of pelvis

Hope it was of help!
