Question: Hello Doctor, The problem I am mentioning below is about by Mother's health issue. She is in her 50s now. She had her uterus removed 9 years back. Now for the past one week she is suffering from severe knee pain in her right leg. The leg is swollen from the knee part till the foot and she suffers a lot of pain while walking and even when sleeping if t legs are stretched. She consulted ayurvedic doctor and she said that she has Arthritis (No tests were taken) and the doctor prescribed certain tablets. But even after consuming the tablets, her pain is not eased nor the swelling. But we are really afraid to consult an allopathy doctor as most of the arthritis cases require surgery and costs high. Doctor, so could you please guide me how shall we proceed further and the types of test the Doctors will take to diagnose the illness and the kind of treatments available for Arthritis(without under going surgery is there any other options available)

Brief Answer: It is osteoarthritis, treatment intraarticular inj Detailed Answer: hello, From what you have mentioned regarding your mother, she seems to be suffering from osteoarthritis. This is a degenerative condition which most commonly involves the knee and hip joint. As you say that the knee is swollen, the best option would be to consult a rheumatologist who will get a knee xray done in standing position and also remove fluid from her joint which will be tested. This is the best treatment, other options are to take anti inflammatory medication, calcium and vitamin D supplements. These are the options available, surgery may be avoided at present. Once acute inflammation has subsided knee exercises need to be started.
