What Causes Severe Jaw Pain While Taking Carafate For Bile Reflux?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Nov 2015
Question: I have recently started taking carafate for bile reflux. I have TMJ, but since taking carafate the pain in my jaw is much, much more constant and intense. Could this be a side effect of carafate? If so, how long after I discontinue use of carafate should the side effects go away?

Brief Answer:
Jaw pain unrelated to carafate

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are taking carafate for reflux and since starting it you have noticed an increase in jaw pain. The jaw pain is not related to the taking of carafate because carafate is not absorbed into the body. The carafate is excreted entirely out of the colon and never gets system absorption. The only side effects for carafate is GI like constipation and cramping.

If you still think the carafate is affecting your jaw you can stop it immediately and after 1-2 bowel movements the medication will be out of your body
