What Causes Severe Heart Burn Along With Vomiting And Feeling Of Lump Inside Throat?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Hello,
I have been scheduled for an endoscopy because of stomach/ digestive track issues. My symptoms have been evolving for 4 to 5 years. Starting with severe heart burn. Then less heartburn but had a sensation of something being stuck in my throat. That feeling has subsided a bit and occurs less often with less severity. When it does occur it is generally brought on by eating or drinking and sometimes causes me to throw up. When that happens, not much comes up. Sometimes foam or stomach acid and a small amount of food or water. Currently have constant dull pain at the top of my stomach below my breast bone that doesn't really ever go away. All of these symptoms have occurred in the last 4 to 5 years, but has always changed and also would go away for periods of time and then return. Since it will be 5 weeks until my appointment, I have spent some time researching online for possibilities. I wish I hadn't because I am now worried about the possibility of cancer since I have used smokeless tobacco for approx 30 years. I am now 48. Is there a chance this could just be acid reflux?

Brief Answer:
More likely to be reflux than cancer! Cancer presents differently!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about what you have reported and all the inconveniences this has caused you. Cancers do not typically present with acid reflux. It starts more with difficulties swallowing. Reflux over several years can lead to cancer but 4-5years is still not sufficient time for this. There is no reason to get to worried about cancer right now. Though you have smoked for the past several years which makes the risk of cancer real, your symptoms as of now are not very suggestive. Please, smoking aggravates both acid reflux and puts you at risk for many cancer types. KEEP AWAY. also, avoid fatty meals, chocolate, alcohol, leaning forward shortly after eating. Also raise the head of your bed when you sleep at night. These would be helpful.

In a few weeks, you would get all this confirmed after the endoscopic exam.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
