What Causes Severe Headache, Insomnia And Mood Swings After Head Injury?

Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: I have had several concussions, most of which went to hospital, but most recent 2 years ago fell down full flight of stairs and hit head on shelving making me unconscious. Decide not to go ER when I came to. IT been a few years but recently I have a more stressful job and have been getting severe headaches maybe once a week, mostly on the side of the injury, it happens at times of stress but is usually on the left side where I hit it about 2 inches above my left eye. I also have difficulty sleeping, and at times feel sort of tingling sensations around the scar area. Im worried of a possible blood vessel ready to pop or cancer due to the pressure. My new job is stressful so I do have a lot of mood changes, and have become much less social. I also take Aderall for last 10 years, and consume about a 12 pack of beer maybe 3 nights a week. and use chewing tabacco. My concern is the pressure, tingling and pain is on one side near the scar area. I also have a very hard time falling asleep and also waking up and sometimes sleep all day sat or sunday. I try not to take aderall after 4pm. My motivation at times is down. and my mood can be very up and down. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Most likely stress disorder than brain injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Two years after head injury is a long period and if there was any associated brain injury, there should have been present other symptoms besides headaches.

It is probable that the damaged head area is more sensitive than other areas, and your symptoms including headaches, sleep problems, mood changes are most likely caused by anxiety and stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder also is a probable diagnosis that may coexist with stress caused by the new job.

In my opinion, you should consult a Psychologist first and discus your concerns.

If any doubts after the Psychologist evaluation about a relation of your concerns to brain injury, imaging studies such brain MRI should be considered.

Thank You, I do see a phyc a couple times a year who has me on low dose of Klonopin, low dose of nortriptiline, and adderal. Recent changes in my carreer have added a lot more stress, so Ill discuss that with him. One last concern is a pulsing feeling around the temple, but also near the injury, Could this be the sensitivity? My concern is on the lines of a damaged blood vessel that is ready to pop. Ive also tried lowering salt consumption thinking possible hypertension. Would this be realistic? I see my phyc in XXXXXXX so just want to weed out or prioritize certain concerns before than. Thanks Again

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

Pulsatile feeling is one of the features of headaches and stress disorder.

So, these conditions need to be addressed first.

If the pulsatile feeling subsides after correct treatment of headaches and stress overload, you shouldn't worry about any vessels damage.

Restriction of salt helps in preventing and lowering blood pressure, but at your age, you shouldn't suffer from high blood pressure.

In order to exclude definitely other causes of your symptoms, besides stress overload, you can consider brain imaging (brain MRI) also.

Hope I helped you.

Best regards.
