What Causes Severe Dizziness?

default
Posted on Sat, 8 Oct 2016
Question: Hello,
I recently had an episode of severe dizziness or vertigo. While sitting bent over to help my grandson with something and when I XXXXXXX the room began to spin. This continued and I couldn't stand and it was getting worse, so I got onto the floor so that I wouldn't fall. This continued for approximately 15 minutes. I also became nauseous. The episode lasted about 30 minutes before I felt normal again. I have Type II Diabetes which is well controlled; my latest Hgb A1C was 6.0. My BP tends to run on the lower side, 100/60. I had no difficulty breathing. Thank you in advance for any information you can give me.

Brief Answer:
It seems like BPPV.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your clinical details and based on that, the most likely possibility is BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). In this condition, there is a minor dysfunction of inner ear, and symptoms of dizziness and nausea are aggravated by sudden movements of head or neck.

It is a self-limiting (not serious) condition in most people and subsides in a short period of time. Fr relief, betahistine tablets may be taken.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
