What Causes Severe Back Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: I have upper back pain from a spinal tap. It's been over two weeks now. The test results were negative. Will this pain subside? Is it something that must be addressed with another medication/procedure/etc...? Ibuprofen and tylenol have not helped

Brief Answer:
Needs evaluation for upper back pain

Detailed Answer:
Hello xxxxxx,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
What was the reason for spinal tap?
The local pain resolves in usually few days . Pain killers or local applicants may be used. No need for any other procedure.
The location of tap is usually lower back and upper back pain is uncommon.
Need to be evaluated for muscle spasm or other cause of pain.
Visit a neurologist for examination and evaluation.
Provide other reports and clinical details.

My upper back pain is also accompanied by a bit of discomfort in the neck as well. If this is true do you still think this pain is not related to the spinal tap? I just find that it is a strange coincidence for the spinal tap to have immediately preceded this pain.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be due to spinal tap

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Spinal tap related local pain and post Lumbar puncture headache are common but neck pain is unusual.
You should take pain killers with muscle relaxant for a week with local ointment.
Consult a neurologist if symptoms persists.
