Brief Answer:
Pain in scalp, either allergic or infective

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Pain in the scalp can be due to two reasons.
It can either be due to a generalised allergic reaction to the product that he is using. Or it could be due to development of lesions of folliculitis which is basically an infection of the hair and follicles.
I would like to know if the pain is all over the scalp or if he has development of raised painful swollen lesions at certain areas.
Does he have any associated itching or pain?
Is there any oozing of fluids?
Since when is he having this problem?
Since when is he using the new shampoo?
Does he apply any hair oil too? If yes, which one?

He has small bumps that look like ingrown hairs or acne and the burning and pain is in those areas alone

Brief Answer:
Lesions of folliculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I think your child has developed lesions of folliculitis which are basically infective lesions of the root of hair follicles . These are quite painful in nature.
He should avoid application of any hair oils.
Wash the hair every alternate day . Apply a topical antibiotic cream like neosporin or mupirocin over the affected areas twice a day.
I am sure this will help.
He can also use a betadine based shampoo which can prevent recurrence .
