What Causes Salty Taste In Mouth During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: I am 19 weeks pregnant and for the past 3 days I have been experiencing a new onset of a symptom that I have never had before. I have been experiencing a salty taste in my mouth, like I have eaten food with too much salt in it (although I haven't eaten anything salty at all and I don't add salt to my diet before pregnancy or now). The salty taste in my mouth never goes away, even after I brush my teeth to try and get rid of it. I have been pregnant once before with my son and I have never experienced this kind of thing. I have had recent blood work done as of last week and there was no mention of issues with my sodium level or anything. Please, can you help?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM forum thanks for writing into is with your health query. I have gone through your complaint and understand your concerns. There can be altered taste sensations during pregnancy which can be new onset. But the good thing is that it gets relieved on its own. Are you taking any medicines which can cause altered taste.? Since your sodium levels and other investigation are normal so it is not a cause for concern regarding pregnancy. You can have mint candies to freshen up the feeling, eventually it will go away in sometime. Wish you all the best for further pregnancy. Regards Dr Manisha Jain.
