What Causes Ringing In Ear?

default
Posted on Sat, 20 Sep 2014
Question: Slight ringing in left ear for last 24 hours. I was very congested for previous 24 hours and stopped using nasal decongestant spray as I thought I might have been getting congested due to spray and not allergy. I have allergy (sinus/nose) and recently started immuotherapy 3 weeks ago - which is beginning to help. Never had ringing in ear before.

Brief Answer:
tinnitus- linked to your congestion

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Tinnitus (perception of sound in the ear) can be associated with different sounds.
Others may hear buzzing, hissing, whooshing or whistling.

Tinnitus can be temporary or permanent but in your case it is likely temporary and related to the history of congestion.

Causes of tinnitus are: (1)ear infection
(2)sinus inflammation/congestion because of the connection with the ear
(3)wax accumulation
(4)hearing loss
(5)meniere's disease
(6)head trauma
(7)anemia
(8)perforated ear drum
(9)tumor
(10)side effect of medication
(11)hypertension
(12) glue ear
(13)hyperthyroidism

In your instance the nasal and sinus congestion would have likely contributed to your symptoms.
If you have any other ear symptoms such as pain or discharge you may want to visit your doctor to rule out co existent ear infection. He or she may also want to check the ear to rule out any issues with the ear drum.

You can try a oral decongestant to help with the congestion.

The tinnitus should resolve with your congestion though it may take a little longer.
