What Causes Ribs With Stomach Muscle Cramps When Suffering From Pott's Spine?

Question: Hi, my father is diabetic since 35 yrs on insulin with diabetic under control. On dialysis 2/wk had a CABG 7.5 yrs back had an inginial hernia surgery done 2 months back. He has been diagnosed with Pott's Spine D9-10. He has been put on AKT medication, since last 3weeks. The pain has shifted from the back to ribs with stomach muscle cramps. He is unable to bare the pain while turning to the side from the face up position while lying and even to sit up from the lying position. A CT guided biopsy of the bone (same location) was negative. The doc mention the report is inconclusive and need to see a neurosurgeon.
1) why do we need to see a neurosurgeon?
2) can a CT guided biopsy of the lesion be done again and those be aspirated to relieve the pain?
3) Is this a 100% curable disease?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.
As biopsy is negative diagnosis of potts need to be confirmed.
As pain is radiating to rib and symptoms are not relieving you may need to consult/take opinion of other specialist like spine surgeon or neurosurgeon.

CT guided biopsy can be done again to get good sample of affected tissue, but biopsy will not relieve pain. You can send biopsy sample for TB-PCR.
If disease is Tuberculosis of spine it is curable.
H may require further investigation.

He should take absolute bed rest to avoid vertebra collapse.
Diet should be high protein with high antioxidants.

I will advise you to improve his immunity to combat against potts by high protein food, and some herbal immunity boosters.
Many of my patients get relief by yoga pranayama and XXXXXXX XXXXXXX so you can also due that.

Thank you Doctor.
Could you suggest some immunity booster and antioxidants for him (being diabetic and on dialysis)?
Can the lesion be aspirated to relieve pressure on the nerve in that region, thus relieving pain?
What pain management would you suggest? He had used ultracet for a long time and I fear side effects due to long term use.
