What Causes Repeated Vomiting And Viral Cough In Infants?

Question: My 8-month-old daughter was born healthy, has been a perfect sleeper and been very happy baby despite her the handful of viral illnesses (including RSV and 2 ear infections) she has had this winter. Before the most recent illness, she has been prescribed a prednisone twice and two antibiotics which seemed to have no real affect on her stomach. Most recently, she came down with another virus where a rash appeared on her belly and she began to vomit only at night. We took her to the doctor and they prescribed a 10-day course of Amoxocillin. At the end of the 10-day course, her older sister came down with a gi virus and the nighttime vomiting resumed beginning March 11. She vomited five times (only at night) that week, she had blackish greenish sour smelling stools that were normal consistency and her appetite was decreased. On March 17, we took her to the pediatrician who said she had a virus and to give it some time. After five more nights of vomiting, even less of an appetite (full on screaming during feedings), we took her back to the doctor on March 22. They tested her for Cdiff and prescribed Prevcaid. The reflux meds seemed to help her appetite a bit but she still vomited twice that week. After some research, I thought that maybe due to all the harsh meds that she has been on and stomach virus she had, maybe she developed an intolerance to Milk Protein or Lactose. I then decided to start feeding her Nutramigen (a hypoallergenic formula). She has been on the new formula a week and it has helped increase her appetite even more but she still has vomited twice and still has the acidic/sour smelling stools. To describe the vomiting episodes she usually wakes after sleeping an hour screams as if she is in pain, arches her back and either vomits in the crib or in our arms after we get her. The vomit is forceful and is requires us to mop the floor in her room (it is not just a little bit of spit up). Recently, we have noticed that what is coming up is mostly clear with some white foamy looking stuff on top. Another symptom that we have noticed is that she is always waking up with a stuffy nose, almost as if she is starting to come down with a cold. But by lunchtime, the congestion is gone. We have had over a month of nighttime vomiting and we are very concerned and our pediatrician is of no help because she has begun to gain weight back the last two weeks. Although her appetite has seemed to improve a bit (but is not back to normal) and the vomiting episodes have decreased, she is still not her normal self. We have tried everything we can think of and are exhausted. We know something is wrong and just want our happy, healthy baby back. Thank you for your input. Karen

Brief Answer: all looks like just oesophageal reflux. Need more details Detailed Answer: Repeated vomits, viral cough, all mimick a reflux disease. It is quite common in this age group. I require weight milestones and details about investigations and medicines you claim having tried. That will help me be precise with interpretation. Thank you
