What Causes Reduced Lactation?

Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: Hi

My baby boy is 3.5 mnth old, weighing 5.9 kg. His birth weight was 2.86 kgs.his height is 65 cm. For the last one week he seems to be irritated n does not feed well. Does not sleep well too. Have consulted the pediatrician who said he is gaining only 15 gms instead of 30gms earlier. I tried expressing my milk bt the quantity I could express was very less. My milk flow is slow too. Thus I feel my milk production has reduced.in the past two weeks I underwent a lot of stress, could dat be a reason for lesser milk production? Please suggest what I can have to increase my milk production.

Thank you
doctor

Brief Answer:
Relax and calm yourself

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
Successful Breastfeeding requires the mother to be relaxed and free from stress.
You need to relax first, listen to music, watch your favourite movie etC.
Feed in a dark room and do not worry much.
Your baby's weight has doubled in 3.5 months which is very good and normal.
Drink plenty of liquids and milk atleast 4 litres in day total.
Try tablets like lactare granules thrice daily for a week to see if that helps.
If nothing works then you can decide about formula feeding in a few weeks based on his weight gain.
Wishing your child good health.
Regards
Dr Arun
