What Causes Red Spot In Stool?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: I had a small bright red spot in my stool but no blood on the paper. Worried it may be blood but no discoloration in the water. 2 evenings ago I had granola with dried cranberries, is it pssible they did not fully digest? Should I see a specialist. I am 57 in great health and had a clean colonoscopy 6 years ago. My email is YYYY@YYYY .
Thanks!!

Brief Answer:
I strongly suspect the same, but need to be sure so...

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Have you even experienced eating corn or sun dried tomatoes or sun dried red chillies? Well if you haven't then you should know that in more cases than not, you will see part of the above mentioned food items in your stool passed out as undigested matter.

I would however suspect remnants of the dried cranberries to be the red spot you noticed, but just to be sure I request you to watch and observe your stool for another day without having cranberries as part of your diet (i.e. they have to be excluded). If there is no red item or spot in your stool anymore and no discolouration of the water then this was for sure the dried cranberry and absolutely nothing harmful.

But if at all you seem to notice the same spots despite of being off the cranberries, or discolouration of the water you pass your stool in, then please do schedule an appointment with a gastroenterologist.

I hope you find my response helpful ma'am. In my opinion there is absolutely nothing wrong with you, and I hope and pray you go on to live a beautiful and healthy life ahead. Please also know that I am always here to help, so please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes ma'am.
