What Causes Red Bumps At The Base Of Penis?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Sep 2014
Question: I have bumps at the base of penis that have persisted for more than three weeks. I have been shaving against the grain in the region and also using baby powder to cut down on moisture. I believe the red bumps are where hair would come out of the follicle. There is one that may be darker in color and may have an ingrown hair. I remember cutting myself in the area and also pulling out hairs where the discolored bump is on the side of the penis. All other red bumps are underneath the shaft and there is one on the other side.

Brief Answer:
After shave folliculitis!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about these bumps that you have reported.

From the information you have provided, this is after shave follicuitis. I will suggest that that when you next have to shave, avoid shaving too low as any irritation would provoke and aggravate these. Keep this area clean, dry, airy and avoid it being hot, humid and moist to hasten healing. Cleansing with an antispetic like iodine is enough. Bacitracin is okay but you can still go without it. Stepping up your hygienic standards would be of added advantage. Washing the pubic and genital area at least twice daily with soap and water is going to be of help.

This should normally regress and healing would be complete within 10-14days. Unless something else comes up, there is no reason to seek further medical care at this time. Keep me updated and let me know how well you are progressing.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
