What Causes Recurring Stiffness In Neck, Headache And Stomach Pain In A Child?

Question: Hello,
My daughter came down with flu 10 days ago - she had a 101 temp for one night with pain in left hip, neck ache, headache, and stomach ache. We took her to her pediatrician and she got tested for strep and that was negative. She looked at her neck and said it wasn't stiff enough to be meningitis. After 3 days her hip pain was gone and her neck pain went away after 4 days. All that remained was headache, allergy "shinners" under her eyes, and an off and off headache. I sent her back to school on day 8 when all symptoms subsided and yesturday on day 9 she woke up again with neck stiffness, headache and stomach ache again. The neck stiffness is the same as it was when we took her to the doctor and she had a very low grade temp last night (99) which subsided after giving her advil. Now this morning all that is left is this neck ache. It hurts in the back of her neck and radiates to the left side of her neck. The day before she got sick she had a very intense gymnastics challenge and so I am starting to wonder if she pulled a muscle or if this is flu or something I should take her in for. Thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Neck pain

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
Flu is a tough illness sometimes. Based on what you are describing, it seems like she recovered. Also, it certainly an easier illness to recover from, compared to meningitis. Thankfully she was not diagnosed with that.

The low grade temp last night could easily be attributed to a harmless viral illness passing through. The neck pain is more likely due to soreness from activity and is nothing to worry about. Warm compresses should take of it.
