Question: my friend is in the final stages of cirrhosis. She has been hosopitalized twice in the last two weeks due to fluids and varicies being tied up. She has been in agony. Is there a reason she cant have pain medicine. She is truly suffering? She is going to die anyways. why cant they at least treat her humanly?

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. I'm sorry to hear that your friend is suffering that much. Actually in cirrhosis there is recurrent fluid formation in the body(ascites) with variceal bleeding. Once the process of cirrhosis is started, it can NOT be reversed. Only thing any doctor can do is to treat the symptoms. As you have seen yourself that varices have been tied but they rebleed after a while. Similarly if you drain fluid then it fors again. Most of the analgesics are metabolized in liver. As in this condition liver has stopped working so strong analgesics unfortunately can not be given. Else they will potentiate the problem and patient may go into Hepatic Encephalopathy soon. These are the reasons why you feel doctor is not doing anything.
