What Causes Recurrent Deep Vein Thrombosis?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Oct 2016
Question: I have a history of DVT in my left leg. Last Doppler showed (remaining clot, but no significant occlusion). Also in that leg, I have had knee surgery (6pins and plate), and also total hip replacement in left hip. I then hurt my back last Saturday (lower thoracic/upper lumbar). A couple of days ago, my left leg started to swell again and tingle. And this morning I woke up with neck pain (on left side) and am now developing a headache on the left side. I had a massage on thursday and am afraid that perhaps I had a blood clot that was dislodged from the massage and now moving up toward brain.

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely to go to brain. Do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Welcome to Health Care Magic and Thank you for your question.
I am a Vascular Surgeon and will try to help you.
Please do let me know when did you suffer your first DVT?
You could be having a recurrence of the DVT. But clot going to the brain is highly unlikely. DVT clots can travel to the lung circulation but not to brain.
So do not worry. The headache or neck pain should not be related.
Please get a Doppler done to see whether there are any acute clots? A blood test called DDimer will also be able to point towards an acute episode of DVT. If it is acute DVT then Heparin would need to be started and you would need another spell of anti coagulation with Warfarin or Acitrom. I suggest you start wearing Compression stockings and get the tests done and let me know the reports.
Take care and do let me know if there are any queries on this issue.
