Posted on Fri, 4 Sep 2015
Question: My 1 year old is just getting over a rash on her legs, and now has bad breath. Are these 2 signs of an infection? She had a high fever, 104 for 3 days almost 2 weeks ago. Fever broke and rash on her body, legs and arms. Now fever free for a week but rash is back and is on her legs and arms-although is has faded and seems to be going away BUT now she has horrible breath.

Brief Answer:
I would like to rule out streptococcal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I can understand your concern. After going through the details I would like to rule out streptococcal infection leading to tonsillitis infection.
I would like to know
if there is any swallowing problem along with bad breath?
Is there any redness of tongue?
Has he recieved any treatment for these symptoms?
In streptococcal infection(scarlet fever) there can be rash with fever. But sore throat is also a predominant feature. The rashes usually fades away over a period of 2-3 weeks.
This sore throat (tonsillitis)may cause bad breath.
Here you have not mentioned sore throat.

I would like to get him clinically evaluated by a pediatrician for proper diagnosis and management accordingly.
Waiting for your response so that I better able to help you out.

Please let me know if you have any more query.
Regards

Our there any other signs of scarlet fever besides fever? They looked at her throat when we went in for the high fever, and then said it was her ears. My dr. isn't in the office till Monday. She is eating fine, and acts 'normal.'

Brief Answer:
Use chlohexidine antiseptic solution for mouth wash

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back

I wont get overly worried if child is active, playful, eating well, there is no fever and only complaint is bad breath .
If there is no sore throat the condition does not fit into the criteria of streptococcal infection (scarlet fever).
I would suggest for mouth rinsing with chlorhexidine antiseptic solution 2-3 times a day for relief in foul breath.
Avoid too much use of candies and chocolates and brush at least twice a day.
Get her examined by your physician when he comes back.
If you have any doubt or you are noticing any other symptoms, please let me know.

Regards
