What Causes Rash Sores On Both Legs And Arms After Being Allergic To Statin Drugs?

Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: been taking 40mg simivastatin for 1 1/2 yrs after becoming allergic reaction to Lipitor add 5 mg of onglyza 1yr ago broke out in rash sores that started on both legs and arms my be allergic to all statin drugs although rash sores is a side effect of onglyza also what do you think?
YYYY@YYYY I am seeing my PA tomorrow who had advised me to stop taking both drugs. been off statin for 18 days and sores and rashes are drying up and itching is gone. Been off Onglyza for 6 weeks now. Is it the combination of both drugs that are causing the reaction. I also have allergies and am on maintainence taking 1 injection monthly along with generic zyrtec and generic allegra as well as as generic singulair
The rash sores started in late December 2013, thought the rash that turned into sores was just dry skin because exzcema runs in my family. Sores looked like small postules on the skin. Is there a common ingrediant in the statin drugs that I may be allergic to? I understand that Lipitor is 100% synthetic I will need to find a safe alternative to take to keep my cholestrol and triglycerides in check

Brief Answer:
Rash after simvastatin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to healthcare magic,
What you could be having could very well be eczema. Eczema runs in your family you mentioned. Dry skin makes eczema worse. There are three things in you which makes dryness worse, 1. Age- As age progresses the oil glands become less active
2. Diabetes- Diabetics have dry skin (Xerosis) 3. Statins- Statins have a property of producing dryness.
Rash produced by medicines are unique and can be clinically diagnosed by dermatologist. You have a feature to upload the images by yourself at the right side of the query page, please utilize that so that I can assess the rash and advise. You can also send the image as attachment to YYYY@YYYY , with the subject as 'Attn: Dr. Johny Chacko'.
For eczema you might need to apply topical steroids till remission. You should apply a moisturizing cream on a daily basis to keep skin oily and supple.

In short, I would like to review the rashes before concluding it as drug allergy.

Hope this helped,
Take care.

thanks for the information. I am scheduled to see my dermatologist on May 7th. He did a biopsy on me a couple of years back and determined I was allergic to Lipitor. Although eczema runs in my family, I have not had a break out in decades. The allegeric reaction to Lipitor showed up as big red splotches that caused some itching. started out as small rash on face and slowly took off and spread down to leg areas on both side of the body. My medicine had been changed from zocor to lipitor because of a cheaper price @ the time. This particular rash I acquired this time started on my legs and arms went to my hands and forearms and on both thighs. Stomach started to itch, but by that time had stopped taking the onglyza and a few weeks later stopped taking Lipitor. I am using curel lotion to moisturize my skin and that has helped also was using 1% cortizone cream to help with the itch. My allergist looked at my skin and in his opinion said it appeared to be a drug induced reaction. Hopefully My dermatologist will be able to determine the cause. I was trying to determine if the was a common ingredient in all of the statin's that I might be allergic to and the possibility exists that I may not be a canidate for further statin use. My skin looks 100% better with little to no itch. When it was full blown the itch was nearly unbearable. Used benedryl to sleep @ night. Thanks for the info Dr.

Brief Answer:
Statins

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome back,
If you are allergic to one statin it is better to avoid the entire group because cross sensitivity to other statins are very common because of the similarity in the structure. Your regime of moisturizer, cortizone and benadryl is fine and you may continue the same.
Hope I have answered your query,
Take care.
