What Causes Rash On Scrotum After Shaving Pubic Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Sep 2014
Question: I shaved my pubic area including my scrotum 2 weeks ago. Two days ago I began to develop a rash on my scrotum. Around a few (3-5) of the hair folicles there were dark red/black dots. Now the back dots have become white like pimples. Is there cause for alarm? I was initially worried it was herpes but the rash is not painful just mildly itchy. The skin of the affected area is also somewhat leathery. I am attaching a picture for you to look at. Any advice would be appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Tinea cruris: Fungal infection of the area

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the rash on scrotum. After analyzing the picture it appears that this is a type of fungal infection which is occurs at groin region which is known as tinea cruris.

Fungal infections are common type of infections which can affect anybody at any site. But more commonly it affects the areas which are more prone for sweating or moist areas (as in your case). More specifically these are related to the hygiene and environmental factors along with certain systemic complaints.

Due to hot and humid climate or due to tight and synthetic clothing, it leads to growth of fungus at any part of the body.

For the betterment kindly follow the suggestion below:

- Keep your self away from hot and humid climate.

- Take two times bath.

- Wear cotton clothes and cotton undergarments to be changed two times a day. Do not wear any synthetic or tight garments.

- Do cold compression or warm water compresses according to the weather condition.

- Do not sit continuously for long hours.

-If I were your treating dermatologist then suggested to apply latest anti-fungal creams such as "Sertaconazole" or "Amorolfine " and take anti-fungal tablets according to medical advise.

-If I were your treating dermatologist then suggested to take oral anti histamine like loratadine or levocetrizine two times a day under medial advise if there is moderate to severe itching is present.

-Don't try to scratch or rub the area as can lead to further aggravation of the problem.

- You can use any good antiperspirant powders daily to avoid future infection.

You can follow the above regimen for 3-4 days and if benefit occurs can follow the same for next 10-14 days.

You need to check all the above conditions of moistness or humidity to prevent fungal growth.

I hope these information's will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

Thank you for your help! Would a miconazole topical cream work? Or is there a more beneficial cream to use?

Brief Answer:
Miconazole cream would definitely be working

Detailed Answer:
Dear young fellow,

thanks a lot for so swift follow up.

Miconazole cream would definitely be working and there is issue regarding its usage in your condition. Apply in very thin layer so that it should not be visible to the naked eye. A rule o thumb is to apply a pea size amount on palm size area, so you can apply accordingly the minimum amount.

Do not forget to do all the other measures suggested in the previous mail.

You will be alright soon.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help or if not then can close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you good health.

Thank you, one final question. When you say apply cold or warm compress depending on the weather do you mean if it is hot use cold compress and if it is cold use warm?

Brief Answer:
Cold compressions when hot outside.

Detailed Answer:
Hello young fellow,

Welcome again to the forum.

Use of compression depends on external weather conditions. If it is cold outside then a warm compress is beneficial and if it is hot outside then cold compression is more beneficial and gives a soothing feel.

I hope these informations will help you. I will be glad to answer any further queries or if not then can close the discussion and rate the answer.

With regards,

Dr Sanjay
