What Causes Raised Patches Of White Tissue On Gums?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: I am a 28 years old female and I have a weird teeth condition that somehow no one is able to completely determine. My gums have become white and raised in last 2-3 weeks and behind the front two teeth, the center skin feels like it has a small blister, sort of. Gums are sensitive to only very hot food and drinks, no sensitivity to cold consumption. There is no bleeding, no pain, no spongy gums, no elongation. Infact they look as if they've been burned(like the skin gets white when it's scalded with hot water) I have a very good dental history. I visit a dentist every 6 months for routine check-ups. I showed my regular dentist this condition who happens to be an MDS with area of speciality in Peridontology and he couldn't find any infection in my mouth or any swelling in my gums. To him the blister looked like some injury. I stopped drinking hot beverages and stopped consuming hot food, started rinsing my mouth with salt water and started massaging my gums with Coconut Oil once a day too. Within 2-3 days my raised gums started settling down in their place and the sensitivity in the front two teeth almost disappeared. It had got better to a great extent, until 2 days ago I accidentally gulped down some very hot coffee. Now, I'm back to square one.
I'm not sure but it feels to me like I may have a yeast infection in my mouth. As the symptoms are somewhat similar(burning sensation in gums & scalded-looking skin), but I don't have any patchy areas on either tongue or cheek or throat. Although I have 1-2 small blisters on the back of my lip area which got developed as soon as I gulped down the coffee 2 days ago. FYI, I am currently undergoing a homeopathic treatment for vaginal yeast infection that has been causing my burning sensation and itching in the vaginal area. And I just got the results yesterday for my urine test and they have detected 20-25 pus cells, 10-15 epithelial cells, 8-10 RBCs & 1+ Protein. My blood sugar is normal. Also, I observed that the vaginal yeast and gums problem started almost around the same time. I think they might be interrelated but I'd appreciate an expert opinion on the same.

Brief Answer:
Does not seems to be infection, the cause seems to be thermal injury only..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms it seems that your gums are sensitive or delicate in the area of front teeth and when you take anything hot there is thermal assault or injury to the gums leading to sensitivity and raised gums..

The yeast infection does not seems to be the cause in your case as it manifests as white cheesy patches and as you are already on anti-fungal medicines if it would be the cause resolution might have taken place..

Nothing to worry, for a few days avoid hot foods and beverages completely as well as do not take excessive spices..
Do cold water rinses..
Suck on ice pops..
For preventing sensitivity you can apply a desensitizing tooth paste over the teeth..
Take a multivitamin tablet for 1 month..
Massage your gums gently twice a day using a gum paint..
Use an ultra-soft toothbrush for brushing teeth to prevent trauma to gums..
Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..

Do for 15 days and revert me back with the progress..

In case if you do not find any improvement a biopsy can help in diagnosis..

If you have further queries you are most welcome..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..

Thank you, Doctor. I really appreciate your response. A part of me believed it was some kind of burns or injury too, as the condition was only worsening after consumption of hot food and beverages. I forgot to mention earlier that I sip a lot of hot water on a daily basis, as it helps with my bloating and acidity problems. Even the milk and tea, I used to try taking while burning hot, before this problem occur ed. I didn't know though whether it was possible for the gums to be burnt, as I've never heard of this problem from anyone I ever discussed it with.
From the action plan provided by you, there are a few things I'm doing already, like chewing one Vitamin C tablet daily, applying desensitizing toothpaste, brushing teeth with an ultra-soft brush & applying gum paint over the gum line before going to bed. However, I'd like to bring to your notice that applying gum paint is making my condition worse for some reason, and the blister feels even bigger next morning. On the other hand, coconut oil makes me feel better.
Also, I'm unable to do cold water rinse because I have a sensitive tooth in the lower jaw area that had been drilled & re-filled by 2 different dentists in last 4 years, and as a result it has become sensitive to cold water in last 1 year and drinking anything cold immediately triggers a jaw, ear & eye pain. Only remedy for that problematic tooth has been so far is to brush my teeth with lukewarm water & sip and drink only lukewarm water whenever I'm thirsty too, as I'm avoiding an RCT.
I will start taking multi-vitamin on your advise, and will also suck on ice pops.
Thanks again for your wisely advise.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Excessive intake of hot liquids is causing irritation to gums..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome Again..

As you are taking excessively hot liquids it seems to me the main culprit behind the problem you are facing..

Avoid all the hot food stuffs and if you wish you can take XXXXXXX warm water and other fluids..
For digestive problems you should not simply rely on hot water, you should take medication like Pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily and one dose in it should be empty stomach in morning.
If you have acidity take antacid like Digene half an hour before meals..
Avoid oily and spicy foods and take more of green vegetables and home cooked food..
Take more of raw fruits and vegetables..

In case if you have a decayed tooth that is sensitive to cold you should not delay the root canal treatment as delaying will only increase the problem and has no benefit..

The treatments I advised should be continued and if gum paint does not suit you can use a chlorohexidine containing oral paste and apply gently over the gums and massage with fingers..

Hopefully you will get relieved soon..
