default
Posted on Mon, 23 May 2016
Question: I have an artery on left side of my neck that started pulsing today all day. I am concerned - any idea? I am 49 yr old woman , healthy maybe a few pounds over weight. Now my eye is twitching with the artery

Hello - thank you for the quick response. My real question is do you think I am ok until tomorrow. This pulsating vein doesn't mean impending doom tonight? I did have a bp of 160 over 100 about 4 weeks ago when I was very sick with a bronchial virus. I have not followed up since with doctor so this could be bp related. Regards, XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Have you measured your blood pressure today? What are the values?

These symptoms could be related to anxiety or high blood pressure.

I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical examination and some tests:

- a resting ECG and cardiac ultrasound (for possible aortal valve insufficiency)
- a Doppler ultrasound of the neck vessels to examine the blood flow in them
- some blood lab tests (complete blood count, fasting glucose, thyroid hormone levels, blood electrolytes, PCR, sedimentation rate).

You should discuss with your doctor on the above mentioned tests.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Detailed Answer:
Hello again XXXX!

Thank you for the additional information!

I would explain that your blood pressure values are above the normal ranges. The pulsating neck artery could be related to this.

I would recommend consulting with your doctor for the above mentioned tests and a chest X ray study, to exclude other secondary causes of high blood pressure.

Some tips to have a better control of your blood pressure would be:

- reduce salt and caffeine intake
- perform a lot of physical activity
- reduce your weight.

Hope you will find this answer helpful.

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
