What Causes Puffy Areola While Treating Hypothyroidism?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Apr 2016
Question: I have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and take 50mg of levothyroxine daily. I have a small area on my right areola near the bottom of it that looks puffy when in a relaxed state. My Dr stated that I had some fibroids in that area after an exam. I do not feel any lumps, hardness and there is no nipple discharge. I'm 51 and premenopausal. What could be causing this condition? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
A harmless benign finding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The puffy area near the right areola can be a normal variation due to relaxation of muscles in the area. To diagnose any anatomical deformity like a fibroid/ fibroadenoma, it is best to get a mammogram done. A benign swelling like fibroid can happen in premenopausal age group and this may reduce spontaneously after menopause due to decreased effect of hormones.
Fibroadenoma of a breast is a benign lesion and it does not progress. Usually no treatment is needed. Most of the fibroadenomas regress spontaneously with time without any treatment.
Homeopathy has described a treatment for fibroadenoma of breast.
The simple measures to reduce the lump size are-
1.Application of a hot compress to the affected breast. Soak a towel in castor oil and place it on the area that is affected. Keep this towel in place for about an hour for maximum results. You could also use plain castor oil to regularly massage your breasts. The application of castor oil mixed with essential oils or herbs is also regarded as an effective natural remedy for fibroadenoma.
2.Use of ginger tea is also popular when it comes to natural remedies for fibroadenoma. Dip a towel in the tea while it is still warm. Then, hold the towel against your breast for about 20 to 60 minutes; do this every few hours. This remedy is particularly helpful if you are also experiencing pain and discomfort.

The XXXXXXX glands are much more prominent on that particular areola. Didn't know if that was significant. Thank you.
