What Causes Proteinuria?

default
Posted on Sat, 21 Jun 2014
Question: My son had a routine physical this past week for sports with our Dr that has treated him since age 3. He had an urinalysis done and a routine exam. He completed form with "no restrictions" for him and wished him a good upcoming season. He also wrote a script for routine blood work to be done at our convenience for his file. My problem is on receipt I read the diagnosis line as - proteinuria - which my Dr never mentioned during exam. He didn't go over urinalysis results and I assumed they were normal. Should I follow up with him (he has always been very thorough) . I know low levels of protein can be normal. Please help!

Thank you for the reply and my son doesn't have any other symptoms. I do not have the report my dr has in file. He didn't even go over the report with me. My guess is that the level was low but, for his records it needed to be noted. My son is very active. Even the discussion on blood work was if my son was "agreeable" to it. If he was concerned I wouldn't think he would have let us leave without some kind of follow up. I plan to question results at next appointment. Thank you again.

Brief Answer:
You need not go for an urgent followup

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
As your doctor has no put any restrictions,he is very active, and no any symptoms, there is unlikely anything significant.

Proteinurea means excretion of some proteins in urine. The most common cause is UTI,or any short febrile illness.Other causes like nephritis/nephrotic syndrome can not be considered in your clinical scenario(as there will be other features like significant edema/hypertension/decreases urine output/high colored urine etc).
The significance of proteinurea is determined by the clinical profile(here there is nothing significant) and the absolute value of urine protein estimation. You can discuss this on next visit.

In short,in my opinion,as your doctor advised, you just do the suggested tests at your convenience and followup with that-no need of any urgency.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have no further questions, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
Wishing you healthy days ahead,Thank you.
