default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: Hello Doctor,

Recently I have been noticing that when ever I eat beets my urine and feces are turning pinkish. I follow healthy diet. My diet includes 5 servings of fruits and veggies a day. I avoid sugar. I take Vitamin C (1000mg)and Vitamin E(200 mg) a day. Even after that I get severe acne. Small change in the diet I get the response on the skin. I have researched about it little bit, then I got to know about the low stomach acid. I took the baking soda test. It took more 5 min for me to belch.
I have these following symptoms
1) White dots on the finger nails
2) Beeturia
3) Acne
3) Dry skin
4) whenever I eat heavy meal I feel sleepy
5) Bloating

Shall I supplement myself with Betaine HCL with Pepsin or is there any other problem?

Thanks in advance for the Help.

Brief Answer:
VArious suggestions for the skin, nail and other problems.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the various problems which you have enumerated.

After reviewing your complete query I can make out that you have multiple of problems regarding skin as well as systemically.

Let me guide you best for each of your concerns:

1) White dots on the finger nails: These are very commonly encountered problem in young age. It is known as Leukonychia. There is nothing to be worried about the same as is caused by minor injuries to nail root. I suggest you to avoid trauma to the nail. It is also common in nail biters. So avoid same if doing so. I reassure you that this gets better by itself as the nail grows off.

2) Beeturia: Beets contains high amount of carotene and pigment in it. If eaten then it is quite common to get these pigments excreted more commonly in feces or in urine. So do not worry about the same.

3) Acne : I can make out that you are young girl of 22 years. So it is quite very common to find acne in your age group. In my patients I suggest them to use a gel containing Clindamycin 1 % gel at night time. If not getting better then need to give oral antibiotics.

3) Dry skin: I suggest you to apply a moisturizing lotion or coconut oil just after bath when the body is draping. It preserves the natural moisture of body. Avoid nay moisturizer on face and preferably use gel based moisturizer on face as you have tendency for acne.

4) whenever I eat heavy meal I feel sleepy: It is also quite very normal ot feel the same as most of our blood pools towards stomach for digestion. I suggest you to eat light food rather than heavy. Take multiple meals divided in whole day.
5) Bloating: It is due to heavy meals or also due to eating fruits with meals. Avoid eating fruits with meals. Fruits should be eaten 2 hours before meals. Heavy meals also cause bloating.

I hope all the above information will help you.
My wishes for your good health.

Hello Doc,

Thanks for the answer.
My concern is
I don't get acne all over the month. I get PMS acne. I use benzoyl peroxide. I usually have heavy meal once in a month. The rest of the time I eat very light food. I include flax seed, salads, fruits, dry fruits and fish in the diet. Even after that I get acne before 7 to 10 days of menstrual cycle.

Do help me with the query.

Brief Answer:
Premenstrual acne: various suggestions.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Welcome back and thanks for your further follow up.

Regarding your further query of premenstrual acne: it is due peak level of hormones which induces inflammatory response in oil glands.

This could be due hormonal excess which requires a personalised checkup.

In my patients I suggest them to take tablet containing vitamin B 6 once day. Additionally an anti inflammatory tablet such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken for 3 days before the probable date of menses. I suggest you to meet a dermatologist and get detailed guidance after proper check up.

You can continue to apply benzoyl peroxide over the active pimples.

Diet have no direct implications over pimples so don't worry about the same. Just avoid excess sugary things in your diet.

I hope this helps.
