Brief Answer:
It is due to temporary pressure on sciatic nerve.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,
After going through your query I concluded that your friend got temporary pressure on right sciatic nerve probably due to prolonged sitting at same place without much movement leading to excessive continuous pressure on sciatic nerve in buttock region. Due to this temporary paralysis of nerve occurred. Due to this he gets numbness on the right side whole leg and then pins and needles. As soon as your friend stands the pressure over sciatic nerve is released leading to sciatic nerve again functioning normal therefore numbness goes away as fast as he gets it all the way down his leg .
Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wishing you good health.
Take care.
