Brief Answer:
can be physiologic pigmentation

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and thanks for using healthcaremagic,

Pigmentation of the tongue is usually physiologic - natural. Physiologic pigmentation is racially and genetically determuned.

Physiologic pigmentation is symptomless and does not require any treatment.
Rarely systemic diseases like addison's disease, von recklinghausen's disease , peutz - jegher's syndrome can produce hyperpigmentation of the tongue. Heavy metal poisoning with lead, and mercury can also produce darker tongue.

Smoking and chewing tobacco can also cause pigmentation.

All said and done physiologic pigmenatation is the most common cause, so do not worry. See a doctor to rule out other causes.
Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi.
