What Causes Persistent Swelling In Feet And Lower Legs?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Feb 2016
Question: My feet and lower legs have been tightly swollen ever since I sat for many hours sewing the week prior to Christmas. I'm 65 years old, 5ft 7in, 178 pounds, good health, non drinker, non smoker, all blood work in Nov 2015 was good. I usually walk 3 miles a day but the swelling is too tight and uncomfortable. I have elevated legs and taken Lasix. Elevation only helps temporarily. Getting desperate. And worried.

Brief Answer:
need testing

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
Prolonged sitting can cause some swelling but it should be going down now if that is the only cause. It is important for you to see your doctor as soon as possible and get some additional testing done. There are many causes for swelling including blood clots, kidney disease and liver disease. You need to have your legs examined and some repeat blood testing done. It is good that your November blood tests were good but things may have changed. Please make an appointment as soon as possible. Until you are seen prop your legs up as much as possible and avoid all salt and salty foods.
